Uganda to host the FIFA world cup trophy
World Cup trophy tour in Uganda; After covering 34 countries and 49 cities worldwide, the 6kg, 37cm FIFA World Cup trophy is once again in Uganda. This golden masterpiece was first hosted in the pearl of Africa 9 years ago in the lead up to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
This time the trophy is in the build-up to the Russian edition, due June this year, 2018. The world cup trophy tour began last year, in 2017 in Russia, hosts for this year’s tournament and has spent so far 78 days traversing up to 16 cities.
Then later, the trophy began its international tour elsewhere in the English city of London and landed in Africa on 22nd February in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum and it will be on a continental tour until March 16th, covering up to 10 African countries.
President Museveni is the only Ugandan who will be allowed to handle the trophy since Uganda has never won world cup and no one else will be allowed to touch it.
The trophy arrives in Uganda on 5th March 2018, through Entebbe airport, and will begin its tour from state house in Entebbe at 12:00pm, and then will be transported to Coca-cola headquarters in Namanve at 2pm and will finish the day with a VIP tour at Serena hotel Kampala at 8pm in the evening.
The following day, 6th March 2018 is dedicated for public viewing at Lugogo cricket oval in the city of Kampala, where over 30,000 Ugandans and non-Ugandans are expected to turn up for this display. Admission to enter the venue for viewing is by purchase of a 350ml Coca-Cola bottle which is only 1,000UGX (0.3 cents)
The world cup trophy tour of this kind started 4 years back, with the first coming in the lead up to 2006 World Cup in Germany. The tour is run in association with Coca Cola, FIFA’s long-term partners and is aimed at bringing to football fans an experience that would previously be possible with a trip to the FIFA museum in Zurich, Switzerland.
The world cup trophy tour is known to be a memorable adventure for soccer enthusiasts around the world and it is obvious that it surely brings joy to the Ugandan fan base.
