Uganda is a mainstream tourist destination. As the pearl of Africa, Uganda has a vast land incorporating many beautiful features. Uganda is home to magnificent mountains, breathtaking landscapes, expansive national parks filled with various wildlife species, gigantic lakes and hospitable locals. While a large part of the country is covered with nature- the biggest attraction in Uganda, there is still a lot to explore. Just a few cities in Uganda are considered tourist destinations, though there are homesteads to a mosaic of multi-cultural communities.
Cities in Uganda range from large to small and exciting cosmopolitan cities that are perfect getaways. With amazing recreational facilities, history portrayed in monuments and buildings to look back at, nice clubs for exceptional night life in the pearl and excellent local restaurants to feast the local way, Ugandan cities can’t fail to enthrall you.
Below is a review of some of the best cities to visit in Uganda.
Kampala.
This is Uganda’s largest city and administrative capital. It’s located in the heart of the country with so much to explore. This is a tourism destination that is even usually included in many Uganda safari itineraries. A short city tour in Kampala can take a day, however even a week would still not be enough to venture into everything that is with in Kampala.
Visit the Uganda national museum, Gadhafi mosque, Namirembe and Rubaga cathedrals, Buganda Palace, Parliament, downtown and many other interesting spots in Kampala. This is East Africa’s most engaging city and a hub for Uganda’s businesses. Nothing you will fail to get here. For excellent food, there are several fine restaurants to dine.
Entebbe.
This is the country’s major entry and exit, with the sole international airport in Uganda. Even if most of the travelers just pass through it to Uganda’s most remote areas for the wildlife encounters, there is a lot to venture into in Entebbe. A short tour in Entebbe gives a perfect introduction to the unimaginable beauties of the pearl of Africa.
A city located on a peninsula in Lake Victoria in Central Uganda, Entebbe is small yet big. It is a city that a tourist can barely exhaust in just a one-day trip. There’s a lot to do in Entebbe. Visit the Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC), Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, Zika Forest, Reptile Village and the beautiful white sand beaches.
Jinja.
This is the adventure capital of East Africa. Almost all the adrenaline activities in Uganda are done in Jinja. The town prides in being a home to the source of the Nile; Africa’s longest river. Being a residence for the start of the Nile River, there are several rapids and waterfalls that enable whitewater rafting.
Tourists to this city also engage in Bungee jumping, scenery viewing, town walks, and an awesome night experience. Jinja is one of the cities in Uganda still having a number of buildings in the old architect constructed in the colonial rule era. A day or two in Jinja wouldn’t bring any regrets.
Mbale.
Positioned at the outskirts of Mountain Elgon; the mountain with the world’s largest caldera, Mbale is worth every single effort on any safari in Uganda. Though this city is a bit far from Uganda’s capital; Kampala, tourists to Sipi Falls in Kapchorwa, or those hiking mountain Elgon are never miss out the thrilling nightlife in Mbale.
With streets filled with vendors of fresh fruits, fries and crafts, this engaging city is a perfect getaway. Staying in Mbale means sleeping and waking up to the beautiful sights of Mountain Elgon. Also there is a freshness of the air that can only come from mountain tops.
Mbarara.
Her location on the way to the south western tourism hub in Uganda has made it a popular city. It is positioned just a few miles from Lake Mburo national park and on the way to Uganda’s popular parks, including Queen Elizabeth national park for the outstanding wildlife species and stunning landscape, Bwindi impenetrable forest and Mgahinga national parks for their stunning numbers of endangered mountain gorillas.
Mbarara is usually an enroute stopover to or from these beautiful parks. It’s called the land of milk because her many residents keep the long horned cows for milk, and other products. Mbarara has so may fancy restaurants that would satisfy your hunger desires. While in Mbarara, don’t miss visiting Igongo cultural center, a one-stop center exhibiting all western Uganda traditions.
For all along, Uganda is only thought of as a nature based tourism destination. However, city tourism is way too possible in the pearl of Africa to see how nature rightfully blends with modernity.
