31 DAYS COMPREHENSIVE AFRICA SAFARI – “4 countries, one trip”.

The 31 days (a month long) Trans – Africa safari is one of the comprehensive tours that combine over 4 countries in a single package.  DETAILED TRIP ITINERARY:

Day 1: Arrival in Kenya, Nairobi city

Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta international airport, our experienced Kenyan / Tanzanian driver guide will be waiting to pick you up and transfer to your lodge.

Spend the first night in Kenya’s capital and largest city, Nairobi. The city offers amazing opportunities to visit its closest neighbors, including several tourist attractions like the Giraffe Centre, Karen Blixen Museum, Elephant Orphanage and the Bomas of Kenya. Depending on your time of arrival you can visit these sites at an additional cost.

Day 2: Lake Nakuru National park

After an early morning breakfast, proceed to Lake Nakuru national park, located in central Kenya, approximately 88 Miles (155Km) from Nairobi by road.  Along the way you will have a stopover at Thomson Falls and the Rift valley view point where you can take beautiful scenic pictures.

Lake Nakuru lies on the floor of the Great East African Rift Valley, and is one of the top tourist destinations in Africa, surrounded by wooded and bushy grassland. Enjoy the ecological diversity and varied ecosystems ranging from Lake Nakuru itself, famous for flamingos to scenic escarpments and picturesque ridges of the Great Rift Valley. The lake is an important breeding place for the indigenous birds, and a hub for migratory birds. Lake Nakuru National Park is ideal for game drives, birding tours and hiking safaris.

Day 3: To Lake Naivasha, Boat safari

After a hearty breakfast, drive to Lake Naivasha and arrive just in time for lunch at your lodge.

Lake Naivasha is one of Africa’s most famous lakes. It is well known to be home to over 1500 hippos and 400 different species of birds. This is what makes Lake Naivasha an absolute location to view wildlife. The lake also has a rich marine life including numerous types of fish like Tilapia, clay fish hence attracting a variety of fish – eating birds, like African fish eagles, Pelicans, Great cormorant, King fishers, among others.

Embark on a boat cruise in the afternoon to explore the lake’s most famous marine species, such as hippos and birds.

Day 4: Lake Naivasha to Masaai Mara game reserve

Morning check out with a hearty breakfast, and head to Masaai Mara game reserve along Kenya -Tanzania boarder. The journey from Lake Naivasha will take you across the verdant Rift Valley landscapes, with its extinct volcanoes and panoramic views.

Masaai Mara game reserve is best known for its year round animal concentration and the 8th wonder of the world – the wildebeest migration. The reserve hosts the wildebeest migration from the Serengeti plains in Tanzania between the months of July – October.

Upon clearing at the park entrance, proceed to the lodge to check in and have lunch; after lunch, go for an evening game watching safari in the Mara plains. Resident animals here include; Lions, Antelopes, Buffaloes,  Crocodiles and hippos in the Mara river.

Day 5 & 6: Full day game drives in Masaai Mara

Dedicate the 2 days to exclusive game watching safaris within the park, exploring the national park’s most unique species, and stunning scenery of the Mara plains. Before sunrise you will be able to spot different predators after feeding on their prey the previous night. You will return for breakfast at the camp while the sun rises over the game reserve creating a whole serene environment, inter mixed with gorgeous savannah.

Day 7: Travel to Serengeti National park. Afternoon game viewing

After breakfast we pack up again and leave the Maasai Mara, with a picnic lunch en route to the Serengeti. Cross the Kenya – Tanzania common border at Isebania and proceed to Serengeti National Park (via Ndabaka). Serengeti means ‘endless plains’ and is derived from the Masaai language.

Day 8: Full day game drives in Serengeti national park

Spending another day at the Serengeti translates into a better game viewing and photography experience, and enjoy every single moment of your safari in the Serengeti National Park, summed up as ‘one of the most unique areas in the world. The Serengeti contains the largest remaining concentration of plains game in Africa, on a scale, which has no parallel anywhere else in the world.

Day 9: Travel to Ngorongoro conservation area. Via Olduvai Gorge

Another morning game drive in Serengeti. Depart shortly after lunch for Ngorongoro conservation area. Stop at Olduvai gorge to have a look at this prehistoric site. Arrive at your base accommodation on the crater rim for overnight stay.

Day 10: Ngorongoro area. Full day crater tour

Early breakfast 6:00 am, there after depart for crater tour with picnic lunches. Descend in to the crater floor for the full day crater tour. Some 20,000 mammals of size live there, including about 20 black rhinos, making the crater the best place in Tanzania to see the rhino.

The crater floor also has one of the highest carnivore densities in the world. Lions, cheetahs, hyenas and jackals are commonly seen, while leopards may be seen with some good luck. You will spend most of the day in the crater.

Day 11: Ngorongoro to Lake Manyara. Game viewing in the afternoon

After breakfast, depart for nearby Lake Manyara national park. Look out for the tree climbing lions and other thousands of bird species that inhabit this lake. Lake Manyara is located in Arusha and Manyara regions. It’s an extremely diverse lake despite its small size.  Manyara offers the suitable introduction to Tanzania’s wildlife. Over 400 bird species have been recorded, and even a first-time visitor to Africa might expect to observe 100 of these in just a day. Notable ones include counts of pink-hued flamingos on their migration, as well as other large water birds such as, cormorants, pelicans, fish eagles and storks. Even reluctant bird-watchers will find something to watch and marvel at within this amazing national park.

 Day 12: Transfer to Tarangire National park. Afternoon game drives

After morning breakfast, drive to Tarangire National park. Lunch en route followed by an
afternoon Game drive through the park as you head to the Lodge. Tarangire National Park is perched 75 miles southwest of Arusha; this beautiful park is second only to Ngorongoro crater in its concentration of wildlife during dry season.  It has the highest number of elephants recorded and it is second to none anywhere in Tanzania, and its sparse vegetation, strewn with baobab and acacia trees, makes it a beautiful and unique spot.

Day 13: Travel to Arusha airport – to catch flight to Entebbe, Uganda

After breakfast, final exit game drive and head for Arusha. Drop off at the airport, JRO for your flight to Entebbe / Uganda. The flight departs Kilimanjaro airport at 14:35 hrs and arrives in Entebbe at 16:25 hrs. Our experienced Ugandan driver guide will be waiting at Entebbe to transfer you to Kampala. Overnight and dinner in Kampala.

Day 14: Volunteer work with Love Uganda Foundation in Kampala

In the morning after breakfast, hotel pick up by your guide who will drive you to the KASUBI TOMBS in Kampala to visit the burial grounds for the previous four Kabakas (Buganda kings). Therefore, the Kasubi Tombs is a place where the Kabaka and others in Buganda’s cultural hierarchy frequently carry out important ancient Ganda rituals. You will later proceed to our orphanage to meet our charity community, including orphans, widows, former street kids, PWDs among others, courtesy of Love Uganda Foundation. The charity home is located in Kalagi – Mukono district, east of Kampala, about 60km from the city centre.

Here you will be joined by the volunteer team from Love Uganda Foundation, who will take you through the program of the day; these may include; School visits, street outreach, visiting orphans and widows, lectures at our orphanage school, etc. After this encounter, you will drive back to Kampala for dinner and overnight.

Day 15: Travel to Jinja – for white water rafting

In the morning, after breakfast, you will be proceeding to adrift for the amazing experience of white water rafting. This activity will make you feel touched to the Nile waters because you will bond freely with the water falls. So you do not want to miss out on such a beautiful activity. After this awesome adventure, you will have your lunch and relax a bit. After lunch, you take a ride to the source of the Nile-a quiet beautiful spectacular place where the environment is decorated with palm trees and incredible tropical flora. You will get to hear the gurgling Nile waters from a distance, observe local fishermen casting their nets in the river that takes 90 days to reach Egypt! –More so at the Nile you can even visit the floating craft shops and don’t fail to buy anything for yourself. Retire and relax at the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 16: Transfer to Murchison Falls national park. Via Ziwa Rhino sanctuary

After breakfast at your accommodation, embark on the trip to Murchison Falls National Park in the north of Uganda, a journey of about 6 hours’ drive. You traverse through the undulating hill slopes of Nakasongola before branching off at Nakitoma for 7 km to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary just 176km north of Kampala. Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch is the proud home of the only wild rhinos in Uganda following their extinction; and thus offers an unforgettable Rhino tracking experience. Ziwa is the only place where you will be able to see rhinos in the wild.

Presently the sanctuary is home to fifteen (15) southern white rhinos. The sanctuary has become increasingly popular with tourists; for rhino trekking, bird watching, nature walks and relaxation. After this experience, you will continue on the drive to Masindi town for lunch and later proceed to Uganda’s largest park –Murchison Falls National Park for relaxation. Check in at the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 17: Game drive and boat cruise on the Nile

You will wake up very early in the morning to go for a morning game drive where you will have a chance to spot early risers and nocturnal species before they return to their hideouts. This is the most beautiful national park in Uganda and this is because it hosts 4/5 of the big 5 animals and also it also home to one of the most beautiful and powerful falls in the world so far.

Traverse the rolling plains of Uganda’s largest National Park before returning later to the lodge for breakfast.  The 3,893 sq. km park is home to a range of animals, and you will have a chance of viewing some of the Park’s residents including lions, giraffes, Jackson’s hartebeests, antelopes, buffalo, and elephants.  For the birders, you will enjoy a cock tail of them as these areas support the secretary bird and the black chested snake eagle, to name a few.

In the afternoon, go for a boat trip to the base of Murchison Falls, where the Nile thunders through a small 7 meter gorge plunging 43 meters into the Nile on the way to Lake Albert. Lots of bird diversity can be spotted and numerous animals resting and drinking water along the banks of the Nile. The most common ones being hippos, buffaloes, Nile crocodiles and birds include, the African fish eagle, Yellow billed stork, Egyptian goose, Egrets, Malachite kingfisher among others. The launch cruise will take you close to the falls’ base where you will be shown the spot where Ernest Hemingway’s plane crashed during sightseeing tour to Murchison falls Uganda in 1954. You can then get off the boat and go hiking up the side of the falls to the top.

After the cruise, you will drive back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 18: Travel to Kibale Forest National park.

In the morning, take a last game drive in the Buligi sector of the park to spot some of the elusive species that you might have missed the previous day, and continue to the exit of the park as you head towards the south west of Uganda. It is quite a long day drive of about 8 hours. You will break off for lunch in Hoima, and arrive in Fort portal early evening, proceed to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

 Day 19: Chimpanzee trekking and Bigodi wetland walk

After an early breakfast, drive to Kanyanchu, Kibale Park Headquarters, by 8.00a.m for chimpanzee pre-trekking briefing by the park staff. The Chimpanzee trekking experience tends to last 2 – 5 hours and including one hour of direct encounter with these amazing creatures.  In addition to chimps, Kibale forest is home to other primates including the red-tailed and grey-cheeked Mangabey, Phoestes, blue and red-Colobuses. There are many beautiful birds’ species, butterflies and many small insects as well. A visit to Bigodi swamp ecotourism site, given its astounding flora and fauna, will be worth it too. The swamp has numerous populations of birds, a wide range of over 138 different species of birds including the Great Blue Turaco, and swamp animals like Sitatunga antelope. Retreat from this as activity and return to the lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 20: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth national park. Community experience in the evening

After morning breakfast, continue to Uganda’s most popular national park that was named after the 2nd Queen of England, and it is best known for its savannah dwellers, including Buffaloes, Elephants, Leopard, chimpanzees in Kyambura gorge, Hippos, Lions, and many other species. Arrive in the afternoon, and proceed with a game drive to the shores of Lake George for a cultural encounter at Kasoga community experience; activities here include, Canoe racing, visiting traditional homesteads, community activities, etc.

 Day 21: Game drive and boat cruise at Kazinga channel

After a hearty breakfast at the lodge, engage in an early game drive in the undulating savannah plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park and the extensive Kasenyi tracks to explore the park’s unique scenery marked with numerous herds  of wildlife including lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, water bucks, jackals and flocks of unfamiliar bird species.

The activity normally lasts for 3 – 4 hours after which you return to the lodge for relaxation and lunch before proceeding for a launch cruise along the Kazinga Channel. This boasts to be home to one of the largest concentrations of hippopotamus, as well as herds of elephants, buffalo, and other wildlife that come to drink from the river. The Kazinga also attracts a tremendous variety of bird species including the African Eagle, Open-Billed Stork, and Pied Kingfishers.

Later in the early evening, you can engage in other optional activities if you have the time before heading back to your lodge.

Day 22: Transfer to Bwindi impenetrable national park

After breakfast, before you embark on the trip to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in south western part of Uganda, undertake a game drive in Ishasha sector, searching for the tree climbing lions. Ishasha sector is well endowed with the infamous climbing lions together with other wild game that dwell in this woodland part of the park. The tree climbing lions prefer to lie flat on fig tree branches in the mid-morning sun while waiting for their prey.  After this encounter, proceed on the drive to Bwindi arriving in the evening for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 23: Gorilla trekking. Batwa community visit

After an early breakfast, you will take a packed lunch, have a briefing by the game guides at the park headquarters and start your gorilla trail. Hiking through the thick, verdant, rainforest to eventually come across the gorillas in their natural habitat, is an amazing and unforgettable experience.

This encounter takes between 2 to 9 hours and is the highlight of an Africa exploration safari. You will only have 1 hour of close contact with these calm gentle apes, take pictures and get acquainted to them.

Return to the starting point after trekking and have lunch; continue to the lodge, and relax a little bit. We prepare to visit the Batwa communities and get closer to their traditions and culture, including the Kiga dance which is an amazing dance to look at, and the life history of the Batwa people, accompanied by melodious songs and the tales of their history, from the bush to modernity. Retire from this activity, have dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 24: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi. Canoe ride to visit the islands

After breakfast, undertake a journey to the south – in Kabale district to explore this famous lake that is known to be the “lake of 29 islands”. It is arguably the second deepest in Africa, after Lake Tanganyika and it boasts of having an exceptional scenery which flourishes with undulating slopes and steep hills of the Kigezi region.

Day 25: Visit local communities and travel to Rwanda – the Northern Province

After breakfast in the morning, undertake an excursion in Lake Bunyonyi area to explore the lake of 29 islands, hiking to the communities and viewing the amazing scenery of Kigezi region. Later transfer to Rwanda through Chanika boarder. After all the border clearance procedures, we shall proceed to Ruhengeri province of Rwanda within the Virunga chain of mountains, forming splendid scenery as you traverse through to the lodge.

Day 26: Golden monkey trekking. Cultural tour at Ibyi’wachu Cultural village

Wake up in the morning, assemble for a pre-trekking brief by the park rangers, as you prepare to trek these endangered apes. Enter the forests in search of these apes; the golden monkeys are so elusive that you have to walk within the forests to spot them.

In the evening, visit the Iby’iwacu Cultural Village; this experience gives visitors a rare chance to meet local people, in their environment, with a taste of unique culture and traditions. Located just outside the national park, this living museum highlights aspects of traditional Rwanda society. Visitors can expect to be greeted by thunderous drumming, joyful dancing, and the kind of hospitality that has permeated Rwandan society for centuries. The village features hands-on activities related to the rituals and ways of life in the ancient Rwandan kingdom.

Day 27: Transfer to Nyungwe forest National park

Drive from Volcanoes national park, to the south western province of Rwanda to your next destination. Traverse through the scenic panorama of Lake Kivu, the largest lake in Rwanda; stop and take some amazing pictures. Continue on the drive to Nyungwe arriving in the late afternoon for lunch, check in at the lodge and overnight.

Day 28: Forest walk. Afternoon canopy walk

Morning forest exploration in Nyungwe, in search of numerous residents within this thick verdant forest.

The forest is best known for a variety of animal species, and a recognizable population of primates, including baboons, chimpanzees, Black and white colobus monkeys, and many other primates.  After lunch, continue to this thrilling experience to walk on top of the forest canopy; the Nyungwe forest Canopy walk gives visitors a great opportunity to experience the rain forest with the canopy walk way challenge.

It is embedded in a specialized guided tour sloping down from the Uwinka visitor’s center through the Igishigishi trail. The trail which takes approximately 30 minutes to get to the starting point of the canopy allows visitors to walk slowly in a steep slippery valley. The Canopy walk way is 160 Meters, and 70 meters from ground. It has 3 sections with the first Canopy at 45 Meters, the second at 90 Meters and third being at 25 Meters. From the top of the canopy walk way, you will be able to have a great view of the Nyungwe canopy, monkeys playing, close encounter with birds and on a clear day, Lake Kivu can be spotted.

Day 29: Travel to Butale. Visit the royal palace and the genocide church memorial

After morning breakfast, leave Nyungwe and proceed to Kigali; you will pass via Butale for a cultural experience at Nyanza king’s palace in Nyabisindu, the craft shops, and a visit to Ntarama and Nyamata Genocide Memorial churches along the way from Nyungwe.

Arrive in Kigali in the evening for dinner, and overnight.
